Early in 1599 shakespeare, who had been acting with the lord chamberlain’s men since 1594, paid into the coffers of the company a sum of money amounting to 12.5 percent of the cost of building the globe. The globe was designed and constructed for the chamberlain's men by cuthbert burbage, son of the theatre's creator, james burbage. A “commonwealth of nations globe” featuring stones collected from the uk’s highest peaks has been unveiled at the tower of london ahead of the queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations.
