The Old Guitarist. Picasso painted this during the ‘blue period’ of his life. Its brown body is the painting’s only shift in color.

As with all of the pieces from the blue period, this piece is directly related to the artist el greco. It is currently on display in the art institute of chicago as part of the helen birch bartlett memorial collection. The old guitarist’s composition is a nod to el greco.

It was brought on by the depression picasso suffered after the suicide of one of his closest friends, carlos casagemas. The painting is of an old, fatigued man playing the guitar. The old guitarist was painted in 1903, shortly following picasso’s friend suicide. The old guitarist was painted in late 1903 or early 1904.
